Sex and the Lancia Beta Coupe.
Twenty percent of the Lancia production line workers are women.
Despite female chauvinists, the Lancia people find there are certain things women can do better than men. They are convinced that women have sharper eyes, steadier hands and infinitely more patience than men,
that they are painstaking with upholstery, adept at finicky electrical installation, perfectionists with trim.
In fact, a large proportion of the people on the fine are more artisans than mere bolt tighteners. They meticulously hand-buff, sand, file and smooth the metal to a finish inconceivable
with mere metal stamping machines.
Needless to say, the rate of production is modest — about 300 cars a day.
It is Lancia's history of perfection that makes it a name Europeans class easily with Mercedes and Jaguar. A test drive is worth 1000 words.
Lancia: the optimum way from A to B.
The Lancia Beta Coupe is not so arrogant as a Mercedes-Benz; nor is it as rakish as a Jaguar.
The Beta is classically styled, as Lancias have been since 1907. The interior is functionally formed, with tachometer, oil and battery indicators, quartz clock, along with the usual instrumentation. The front bucket seats hold you. They were designed by spine specialists. They recline — all the way back should the fancy seize
you. The rear seats are semibucket too.
From A to B, the Beta Coupe moves briskly — over 100 m.p.h. if you don't watch out (that's over 160 km/h nowadays and its highly illegal). The all-around independent suspension keeps you gracefully in touch with the road. The all-around disc brakes bring you to a controlled stop swiftly. The front wheel drive maintains the road, hangs on around cor
ners. All the while, the Beta engine ekes out gasoline like it was going out of style.
When you get to B, the 5-speed stick shift that moved you so quickly on the road makes you especially nimble in city traffic.
And when you park, Lancia's unostentatious size is a distinct advantage. A test drive will give you a foretaste of controlled luxury.

The Lancia Beta Coupe has snow-good front wheel drive. It gets gratifying gas mileage, has a top speed of over 160 km/h., costs about ,400 with a 5-speed stick, about ,700 with a sun roof. You might even encounter dealers who charge less.
When the cylinder block for a Lancia engine is bored, the hour and temperature are recorded.
There is a reason for this finickiness. Metal expands and contracts as temperature rises or falls so there are microscopic differences in the diameters of cylinders machined at different times of the day,
Lancia engineers have a range of piston sizes a hair's breadth different from one another. Knowing the temperature and time at which the cylinders were bored, they are able to exactly match the right sized pistons.
There is a five million dollar machine just to wash the pistons.
Each engine is bench tested for ten to fifteen minutes before it is
mounted in the Lancia. And then Lancia engineers submit every car to a breathtaking test drive, including the top speed, over 100 miles an hour (160 Km/h).
Many car makers put you through an agonizing 40-50 mile an hour break-in period. A few automobiles are so precisely crafted they need no breaking-in. Lancia is one of them.
