    This is an original certificate of ownership for 8 shares of stock for the South-West Virginia Association in Wytheville, Virginia. Dated June 10 1886, certificate #45, printed in Wytheville by D.A. St.Clair. Each stock was worth .

    In 1885 The Town Council (Wytheville Virginia) approved a ,000.00 maximum subscription to support a Joint Stock Company which was to be organized for the purpose of of purchasing a site for a track and a Jockey Club.The company was erect suitable buildings for an annual Agricultural and Mechanical Fair and Exhibition. The organization was chartered as the Southwest Virginia Association. The officers were Major George R. Dunn, J.G.Kent, H.P. Maupin, and R.W.Pendleton. There were thirteen directors and seven members of an executive committee. They purchased land from Mrs. Maria E. Tomney and Mrs. Catherine Devine at 0 per acre. They planned to make major improvements in time for the fair, such as enclosing the land, constructing the track, and removing buildings from the old fair grounds. The following year, the circus came to town, apparently in connection with the annual fair. In 1887 baseball is first mentioned in the town records. The game was prohibited anywhere in town except at the fairground.
