For your consideration is this Valley Forge Brigadier General Flag for General Don Daniel dated 1984. Gen D. O. Daniel was commander of the 49th Armored Division during Desert Storm.
I purchased this flag in a lot with a 3’ x 5’ Federal ArtGlo Texas Flag made of Rayon. This was Gen Daniel’s Flag too. This piece sold earlier this year.
This is a 2-Sided 3’ x 4’ Rayon Flag with appliqué single star and Appliqué Fringing.
This piece was manufactured by Valley Forge Flag Company May 1984. This is just before his commission 2 November 1984 as a Brigadier General of the 49th Armored Division.
General Daniel began his military career by enlisting in Company B, 358th Infantry, 90th Infantry Division on 11 November 1951. He served in a number of 90th and 75th Division Artillery and Infantry units. At Texas A&M University, he earned a B.S. in engineering and was part of the Class of 1956. He received an ROTC commission in the Infantry on 24 May 1956. He served successfully as a platoon leader and executive officer of a rifle company and as commander of Company B, 5th Tank Battalion, 15th Armor. Following the deactivation of the 90th Infantry Division in January 1966, General Daniel transferred to the 36th Infantry Brigade (Sep) as Intelligence Officer (S2) of 2nd Battalion 141st Infantry and also served as Operations Officer (S3) and Executive Officer of the Battalion. In February 1973, he was assigned as Battalion Commander and following the re-designation of the battalion as a maneuver battalion of the 49th Armored Division, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in January 1974. General Daniel was transferred to Headquarters 49th Armored Division in April 1976 and served as the Division Logistics Officer (G4). He was assigned to 49th Armored Division Support Command and promoted to Colonel on 4 November 1979. On 2 November 1983, General Daniel became the Chief of Staff of the 49th Armored Division. He was reassigned and became the Assistant Division Commander, Maneuver and was promoted to Brigadier General on 2 November 1984. On 23 May 1989 General Daniel assumed command of the 49th Armored Division. LTG Daniel served with honor and distinction with over 38 years of dedicated service to the Texas Army National Guard and the United States Army. As a visionary, caring, servant leader and change agent, he was instrumental in bringing the TXMF and its members to new ways of thinking and adopting new ways of business. He epitomizes the organizational values of the Texas Military Forces, a true trailblazer who made an extraordinary and positive impact on the Texas Military Forces and shaped the organizational environment for the future. LTG Daniel and his wife reside in Mason, TX. He is part of the Texas Military Forces Hall of Honor.
49th ARMORED DIVISION, TEXAS ARMY NATIONAL GUARD
The 49th Armored Division —nicknamed the "Lone Star"— was one of two armored divisions in the United States Army National Guard, redesignated from the 36th Infantry Division (the "T-Patchers") after World War II, and organized and federally recognized on 24 February 1947.
A number of the original divisional units received federal recognition from the National Guard Bureau on February 27, 1947, a date used thereafter as the formation's "birthday". In 1947, all four battalions of the 144th Infantry Regiment were placed into the Division as Mechanized infantry units. Beginning in the northern and northeastern areas of the State, there were 111 units in 56 Texas cities by 1952.
In September 1961, an executive order alerted the division for mobilization at Dallas due to the 1961 Berlin Crisis. On October 15, 1961, the division entered federal service, and it subsequently deployed to Fort Polk, LA. The division was to stay there ten months. In May 1962, the division staged the large-scale Exercise Iron Dragoon, still remembered among National Guard armor exercises. Also while at Fort Polk the division's missile unit became the first Army National Guard unit to fire the Honest John nuclear-tipped surface-to-surface missile. The 49th Armored Division reverted to Texas State control in August 1962.
The 49th was deactivated in 1968 and re-organized into three separate brigades, the 36th, 71st and 72nd. The division was reactivated on 1 November 1973, with its headquarters at Camp Mabry, Austin, Texas.
On 18 July 2004 the division was re-flagged and again designated as the 36th Infantry Division. Prior to its redesignation, the 49th was capstoned to the U.S. Army III Corps and stood as the only fully functional, reserve component, armored division in the United States Army. (The 50th Armored Division in the north eastern states had been eliminated by consolidation with the 42nd Infantry Division in the early 1990s.)
